Piranha-3D (2010)

Review by Mari Adam C. Thomas

Piranha is the latest in the Hollywood trend of taking old movies and making them new, through advents of new technology, re-filming, and rewriting the story to fit modern times. This movie was filmed in 3D, and it was actually a really good fit for the overall theme of the movie.

This movie is very simple, the plot is very thin, and the scares are very cheap. For once, I didn’t actually mind. This movie did what it set out to do, and that was make the audience have fun. The 3D was just OK, the story was retarded, but overall, I had enormous amounts of fun with this movie.

It has everything a good monster slash horror flick needs: Boobs, blood, and a scary ass monster, or in this case, monsters. It also helped that the final scene allegedly broke the record for most gallons of fake blood used in one scene. I won’t ruin it for you, but just know that it definitely earned the record.

Overall, this movie is ridiculous fun, and should be enjoyed as such. The 3D is gimmicky at best, but still entertaining. Whatever you do, don’t take this movie seriously. If you can enjoy it as simple, campy fun, you’ll get a lot more out of this movie than if you were to try and dissect it like other movies with deep, intertwining subplots and rich, tortured characters. It’s the film equivalent of summer light reading, and overall a pretty decent movie.

I give this one an 8 out of 10.
