Audition (1999)
Review by Jeff
Directed by: Takashi Miike
Starring:
Ryo Ishibashi/Shigeharu
Eihi Shiina/Asami
Plot:
A lonely Japanese widower whose son is planning to move out of the house soon expresses his sadness to a friend and fellow film producer, who becomes inspired to hold an audition for a non-existent film so that the widower can select a new potential bride from the resulting audition pool. The widower ultimately becomes enamored with and fascinated by one particular young woman...but first impressions can often be horribly wrong.
Acting:
Shigeharu(Ryo) played a great role and you really felt for the poor guy he is very lonely and just wants happiness, Asami(Eihi) was good as a very mysterious woman, she doesn’t have many lines in the film but her expressions make up for it. Overall the acting in this film was well done.
Gore:
We get some burn’s, a cut off hand, some nifty needle work, and a cut off foot, nothing over the top but man you could feel the pain.
T & A:
We get one brief shot.
Directing:
Miike made this movie feel very dreamlike to where you didn’t know where this film was going, overall it was a well shot film.
Soundtrack:
We get a well done piano score, it really added a lot to the style of the film.
Final thoughts:
I would say this film isn’t for everyone, it is really slow until the last 20 minutes but wow it is well worth the wait. The film has great acting, the settings and mood for the movie are awesome, Miike has a style of his own when it comes to making movies, and he really shines here. I give it a 7/10.
