Black Dynamite (2009)

Review by Mari Lynne Rupp

Starring Michael Jai White, this 2009 offering is a wonderful nod to the blaxploitation films of the 1970's such as Sweet Sweetback's Baadassss song, Superfly and Cleopatra Jones. Black Dynamite comes home to find his brother has been killed by the mob, and in avenging his death, uncovers a drug ring, and a conspiracy that might go all the way to the White House. Michael Jai White has penned up a wonderful homage to the blaxploitation genre of grindhouse. You have conspiracies, kung fu, shirtless guys and T and A, great one-liners and cliches, all the ingredients for a great grindhouse exploitation flick. The producers and directors seemed to have taken a page from Quentin Tarantino's book at reviving the grindhouse genre, playinhg it half serious, yet everyone giving 100% in thier own way. Played as half-comedy, half-exploit, this movie delivers and makes a great Sunday night popcorn movie when you and your honeybee don't want a heavy plot. 8/10
