Black Sunday (1960)
Review by Jeff Hudson

Directed by: Mario Bava
Starring:
Barbara Steele/Katia
John Richardson/Andre
Andrea Checchi/Dr. Kruvajan
Plot:
This chilling vampire tale begins in 17th-century Moldavia, where the evil Princess Asa is executed for witchcraft and vampirism, along with her brother Javutich. Two centuries later, a pair of traveling doctors discover Asa's crypt and inadvertently revive the evil princess, whose scheme of vampiric revenge is aimed at her own identical descendant Princess Katia, an innocent beauty whose lifeblood will ensure Asa's immortality.
Acting:
The acting in this film was ok Barbara Steele(Katia) added to this this flick with just her presence alone, the rest of the cast John Richardson(Andre) and Andrea Checchi(Dr. Kruvajan) did fine but nothing really stood out.
Gore:
The gore was pretty standard for its time, we get a branding, a spiked mask to the face, some off screen stuff, a strangling, a guy burned up and a girl burned alive.
T & A:
None of that stuff here.
Directing:
Bava did a great job making this film feel like a throwback to the old classic Universal Monster movies of the past, the settings were great, and set designs were top notch.
Soundtrack:
The score was real nice it added to the atmosphere of the movie real well.
Final thoughts:
Black Sunday is one of many Bava’s classic films and I thought it was ok but nothing like I thought, for me this film was really hyped and couldn’t wait to see but after viewing it I just thought it was ok. It was a good old classic vampire flick but nothing I haven’t already seen. I would say give this a rent if you like classic horror film. I give it a 5/10.
