The Blob (1958)

Review by Jeff Hudson

Directed by: Irvin S. Yeaworth Jr.

Starring:
Steve McQueen/Steve
Aneta Corsaut/Jane
Earl Rowe/Lt. Dave

Plot:
Steve McQueen and his teenybopper friends try to warn townsfolk about the terror in their midst. But it takes a lot of convincing, even after the Blob has gorged itself on some local denizens. By the time the authorities realize what's going on, it might be too late to stop it.

Acting:
The acting in this film was solid Steve McQueen(Steve) was good but he looked like a 40 year old man playing a 17 year old so that threw me off a bit. Aneta Corsaut(Jane) was good in her role, she was caring and very easy to like. Earl Rowe(Lt. Dave) was also likeable and a standout in the film.

Gore:
We don’t get any gore in the flick but we get people ate by the blob, I only really got that it ate about 6 people but it’s brought up that it ate like 40 or more, don’t know where that came from.

T & A:
None of that stuff here in this 50’s good natured flick.

Directing:
Irvin did a great job with the little budget he had. The setting of the film and the town in general looked real good and the blob itself looked real cool. I could imagine when this came out it scared people half to death.

Soundtrack:
We get a real cool theme song Beware of the Blob! That is very memorable and can easily get stuck in your head. The score itself is like most 50’s movies real subtle at times and suspenseful at others.

Final thoughts:
The Blob is a real fun movie that I think anyone can enjoy. It has a solid cast and moves at a fast pace that really doesn’t have any slow spots. I could see some younger people not really getting into it because of the effects but I would say give this one a shot at least and remember BEWARE OF THE BLOB! I give it a 7/10.
