Caligula 2 (1982)
Review by Jeff Hudson

Directed by: Joe D’Amato

Starring:
David Brandon/Caligula
Laura Gemser/Miriam
Ulla Luna/Clizia
Michele Soavi/Domitius

Plot:
The deranged Roman emperor Caligula (12-41 A.D.) rules Rome with an iron fist and has anyone tortured and executed for even the slightest insubordination. Mostly set during his last year of his reign, as Caligula loses support due to his brutal and crazed excess, a young Moor woman, named Miriam, becomes his lover while plotting to kill him to avenge the murder of a friend which Caligula was responsible for. But Miriam is torn between her personal vendetta against Caligula and her own personal feelings towards him despite his madness and debauched lifestyle of orgies and bloody torture murders.

Acting:
The acting is pretty good for the most part and this is surprising being a D’Amato flick, David Brandon(Caligula) was spot on and played him the best to what I have seen in other films and gives a great performance, it is easy to hate this guy and shows just how brutal he was. Laura Gemser(Miriam) was good and stood out as the lead female she seemed very strong and convincing in her role.

Gore:
This film wasn’t to gory but there was enough to the point across how sadistic Caligula was, we get a cut off tongue, some off screen stuff, stabbing, some brutal torture scenes, a head cut off, and a arrow through the neck.

T & A:
Wow that’s all I can say is wow this movie has something for everyone I lost count for one of the first times during a review on how many breast, muff and penis shots there were, it is very explicit we get full on porno shots showing everything even the money shots. To top it all of we get a girl being extra friendly to a horse…..nuff said.

Directing:
This is pure D’Amato with the grainy look, and cheap looking set pieces and there is always some nudity this time he just went overboard but realistic from what I hear about he really was.

Soundtrack:
The score was well done to fit the time period.

Final thoughts:
Caligula 2 as it’s called has it’s up’s and downs, the acting is really good even though the dubbing looks bad, and it switches from English to another language for apparent reason throughout the movie, The gore is good, and if you like porn this is some early 80’s stuff you might like, but I will say the horse scene did not need to be there. I would say if you are a Joe D’Amato fan you should check this out, or even a fan of Caligula movies, I am not really a fan of this though, it was too long for me and just thought a lot of it I didn’t need to see. I give it a 4/10. Check out revengeismydestiny.com for more shocking and rare titles.
