Chillerama (2011)

Review by David Rupp

It's the closing night at the last drive-in theater in America and Cecil B. Kaufman has planned the ultimate marathon of lost film prints to unleash upon his faithful cinephile patrons. Four films so rare that they have never been exhibited publicly on American soil until this very night! With titles like Wadzilla, I Was A Teenage Werebear, The Diary of Anne Frankenstein, and Zom-B-Movie, Chillerama not only celebrates the golden age of drive-in B horror shlock but also spans over four decades of cinema with something for every bad taste.

Directed by:
Adam Green ("The Diary Of Anne Frankenstein")
Joe Lynch ("Zom-B-Movie")
Adam Rifkin ("Wadzilla")
Tim Sullivan ("I was a Teenage Werebear")

Starring:
Richard Riehle, Adam Rifkin, Ray Wise, Sarah Mutch, Eric Roberts, Owen Benjamin, Joel David Moore, Kristina Klebe, Kane Hodder & Lin Shaye

I was expecting a cheesy, campy and slightly off color offering from Image Entertainments Chillerama, but this really raises the bar for spoofy horror comedy flashbacks. In the loose vein of Creepshow anthologies it belongs right up there with other notable releases this year, such as Bong of the Dead and Tucker and Dale VS Evil.
Four very different styles and subjects are the films showing around the main plot of the last night of an old drive-in. Some of the humor is right in your face such as Wadzillas General Bukkake (see what I did there), the slightly subversive werebears, and the outright zany revenge of Meshugannah. Lets not forget the glue to this book of chuckling horrors, the over the top flesh starved Zom-B-Movie (in glow-o-rama).
I'm sure many will find this slightly childish, probably offensive and in poor taste, get over yourselves. This is a great anthology, well put together, well presented and it fills a nice spot with original horror comedy. I give a sicere tip of the hat to everyone involved with this, I laughed my ass off and still haven't found it yet. You can catch this gem streaming now on Netflix but I reccomend adding this to your collection.
