Cloverfield (2008)
Review by Jeff Hudson

Directed by: Matt Reeves

Starring:
Michael Stahl-David/Rob
T.J. Miller/Hud
Lizzy Caplan/Marlena
Odette Yustman/Beth

Plot:
Rob Hawkins has just gotten a new job, except he's going to have to move from NYC to Tokyo to take it. On the eve of his departure, Rob's brother Jason throws a surprise going away party that's interrupted when a giant monster attacks the city. Receiving a panicked phone call from his ex-girlfriend Beth, Rob races through the destruction with several of his friends to save her.

Acting:
The acting in this film is good if you like to watch all the popular TV shows out there, but I don’t, so its hard for me to relate with these people, Michael Stahl-David(Rob) is ok but can be annoying at times, Lizzy Caplan(marlena) I thought was good and had more of a personality than the other in this movie, the rest of cast is there and hard to tell people apart.

Gore:
There is not a lot of gore here but I wasn’t expecting a lot to begin with, but we get some aftermath stuff, some creature attacks, and some off screen kills.

T & A:
Not a thing here.

Directing:
Matt did a nice job with the style and looks of this film, the handheld camera stuff was great and we get some sweet visual effects that I was pretty impressed with.

Soundtrack:
This is supposed to be real footage so we don’t get a score at all, and it wasn’t needed anyway.

Final thoughts:
I was really hyped up to hear about this movie, and the build up from the trailers was great, then I watched it. The idea is great so that is not the problem I have with it, the problem is that we don’t get people to care about, its just some rich yuppies that you cant feel sorry for. Some other things are there is a helicopter crash that no one would have survived, and where do you get a video camera with a battery that lasts that long? It was a good attempt but if you want to see a good new monster film check out The Host. I give this film a 4/10.
