Creatures from the Pink Lagoon (2006)

Review by David Rupp

Plot via IMDb: In a small town in 1967, plucky young sissy Phillip is about to celebrate his birthday at the beach cottage owned by his best friend Stan. All of Phillip's friends are gathered for the festivities, including Stan's hunky-but-impulsive boyfriend Billy, Billy's shy, nerdy cousin Joseph, and Randall, the chain-smoking, bitter queen of the bunch. Meanwhile, a horde of libidinous gay men - turned into ravenous flesh-eating zombies by toxic mosquitoes at a cruisy highway rest stop - are making their way towards our oblivious celebrants, eating every man in their path.
Written by: Chris Diani & Basil Harris. Directed by: Chris Diani. Starring: Nick Garrison, Lowell Deo, Evan Mosher, Philip D. Clarke, Vincent Kovar, John Kaufmann & Bill Morrison.
Made back in 2006 before the WBC was in full swing and the recent California court battle had everyone up in arms about this that or the other, Creatures from the Pink Lagoon hit on a comedy/horror that never came out of the closet so to speak. Shot in black & white, with corny yet solid dialog, consistent plot and believable characters, we follow the history, demise and rise of our main group.
If you have even the slightest sense of humor you can enjoy this movie and and all it's intentional stereotypes. My impression it wasn't making fun of, as much as pushing all the humerous aspects, rumors and urban myths of being gay into the spotlight. Mix that with the inevitable zombie outbreak, rest stop shenanigans, toxic mosquitos, and a good soundtrack that fits really well, and a sprinkle of Judy Garland and you have a sleeper of a movie that just needs to come out and bee seen.8/10.
