Critters (1986)

Review by Adam C. Thomas

Critters is a monster movie released in the mid eighties starring Dee Wallace, M. Emmett Walsh and Billy Zane. It tells the story of a race of space creatures who look like a mix between a Furby and a piranha. This movie was really, really entertaining. I usually don’t get into the silly monster movies, but this one had something special. I don’t know what it was, but it kept me glued to it the whole time. The story also follows the two space bounty hunters sent to kill all the critters, and they can assume any human image they want, which becomes a plot device later, serving the story well, actually.
The effects in the movie were surprisingly really well done. Considering the time period, and the genre of the movie, I actually expected some half-assed, schlocky effects, but was impressed by the intricacy of the monsters and their maneuverability.
Overall, I really enjoyed this movie, and if you’re a child of the 80s, or just love old school monster flicks, definitely check this one out, as it is most definitely worth your time.
I give “Critters” a 7 out of 10.
