There are many genre actors out there, sticking to their chosen area. And there is of course the other end of the spectrum, sctors who hone their craft in as many differnet genres as possible. Donald Sutherland is known as one of the later, however a quick glace of his resume will reviel a large amount of horror.
Sutherland's career began in the early 60s with small roles in horror films like Castle of the Living Dead, Dr. Terror's House of Horrors and Die! Die! My Darling; these coupled with a smattering of appearences in British television shows planted Donald Sutherland's foot firmly in the door, landing him a role in The Dirty Dozen, amongst others.
However it wasn't long before Sutherland was back in scary film mode, staring in the 1978 remake of Invasion of the Body Snatchers.
The 90s saw Donald appearing the original Buffy the Vampire Slayer movie, Outbreak, Shadow of the Wolf and emmy winning role in the pyscological thriller Citizen X.
Role since have included, An American Haunting and a Frankenstien TV mini-series, showing horror is just some thing he can't escape.
The Beauty of horror as a genre is its vastness; it is a genre that can encompass and blend with just about any other genre. It provides a place for actors, writers and directors alike to build and fine tune their creative skill. Donald Sutherland isn't the first actor to start in horror and break into mainstream film and he will certainly not be the last. It is important to remember what an actor like this brings to the world of horror.
