Eat Me: A Zombie Musical (2009)

Review by Sean Patterson

"Eat me! You heard me, eat me!"
There's a cross-dresser named Peter who drives a bus and has a knack for running people over. There's a guy in a chicken suit, a girl with cat ears, and sexy red riding hoods. What did I just watch? In the spirit of the movie, google The Falsies' We're More Rock n Roll Than You and let it play while allowing this gonzo-style review to wash over your eyes.
Written and directed by Brian Wimer. Eat Me is a bizarre experiment in dadaist filmmaking. I feel like I've just watched an hour and a half of indie music videos. It somehow reminded me of just after the attacks on the World Trade Center in 2001, when MTV got back to its roots and started playing music videos 24/7.
The plot and story make no sense. There may be some religious metaphor involving the bus travelling to the afterlife on highway 666, but I can't parse it out. The music is the focus here. The main characters are all members of the band The Falsies, and their music rocks. The first song in the movie is titled Asian Panties. One of the last songs asks the question, "Who wants to fuck?" The answer, of course, is, "We want to fuck!"
Some of the girls in the movie are very cute. Especially the girl with the cat ears. There's not any nudity, though, so steer clear if that's why you watch low-budget horror.
Fun and well done animation sequences. The Scientology claymation sequence is very funny.
I mentioned the music and I will again. This movie has an excellent collection of indie rock music. This is in addition to The Falsies' soundtrack.
Editing. The best I've seen in low-budget horror. Varied and fascinating camera techniques keep things interesting. Many times throughout the movie filters are used to good effect. This keeps the movie from having that "cheap" look that many other low-budget movies have, and instead it looks intentionally artsy. The movie can be very soothing at times and the pacing is perfect, ramping up to a big rock show zombie-fest finale.
The movie keeps you off balance. You'll never knew what to expect, but you'll also never get bored. Everyone involved in this movie is undoubtedly more rock n roll than you.
