Gothic Charm School (2009)

Review by Sam O'beirn
Author: Jillian Venters

Goth. The Word brings to mind cemeteries at night, Dracula rising from his tomb to feast upon the blood on the living, the music of The Cure, and Bauhaus, as well as black haired, dark dressed people who appear aloof and mysterious. The people, who depending on who you ask, are dangerous, or horribly misunderstood. But how does one find out the things one needs to know about being Goth? How do you know if you are a Goth? What is the etiquette vis a vis dressing like the crow? What are the rules of dance floor etiquette? How should you react to a child that may be veering towards a darker path?

Gothic Charm School answers those questions, and I for one say “THANK GOTH!”

Jillian Venters has written an invaluable guide for all Goths who’ve asked themselves such questions as “What should I do if people want to take my picture?”, “How can I convince my Parents/Boss/Friends that I’m not a demon worshiping, drug addled orgy organizer?” Dispensing good advise for Goths, Goths-to-be, and others who may have people they know who are Goth. The Lady of Manners guides all and explains much in this surprisingly funny, often witty book.

Having worked in Goth clubs and spent most of my adult life immersed in the gothic subculture, I can honestly say that this book is a welcome addition to my dusty and dark bookshelves. Anyone who remembers my rants about Dance floor etiquette just after dragging someone out of the bar will see my point. The chapters on advice for parents and on growing up Goth would have not only been a help to me, but my parents as well, who often worried about my choices in hues and music. The basic tenants seem to be simply “Treat others as you would be treated”, or for those who may take offence at such a Christian attitude, “Be polite, and don’t be a jerk”. Words I can get behind.
