Great Kills: Part Two
Article by Bindi Lavelle

To pick up from last week, we’re going to look at 5 more memorable death scenes. In no particular order this are scenes that stick out in the mind for their creativity, goriness or influence.

Hostel-Josh
In this holiday gone bad flick, there is one death that stands out for its simplicity & cringe factor. There are certain parts of the body, like eyes that when a blade or other foreign object is shown a little to close we can’t help but to squirm. Josh’s death is a good example, his Achilles tendons are cut the he attempts to walk across the room with blood pouring out of the hinge like slits.

Psycho- Marion Crane
Recently we had a bloodbath about psyco, so it should be blindingly obvious (if it wasn’t before) why this scene is important. The infamous shower scene is a celluloid classic. The constant tension & unease of the scene has left bloody hand prints on film since.

The Thing- Vance Norris/ Dr. Copper
John Carpenter, show just how CPR gone seriously wrong looks, but the compositing of this scene is amassing; Watch the making of and be in awe of the practical effects at play. When Norris is assumed dead, Dr.Copper tries to revive him, only to have Vance’s torso open up and rip the doc’s arms off.

Hannibal- Paul Krendler
This scene throws all the tension sustained throughout Silence of the Lambs way the hell out the window. Sure we know the Dr. Lector is a serial killer, and yes he does eat his victims (after cooking them beautifully, of course) but to actually see he do it is another thing all together; particularly as he feeds sautéed brain, cut from Krendler’s open skull to the man himself.

Jaws- Drunk Girl
So much has been written about Jaws and why it is such an iconic suspense film, and to see why you need look no further than this. The unsuspecting swimmer splashes around all the while the shark sneaks up (shown in neat POV) with the ominous theme music playing.

Honorable mentions must also go to The Saw series and The Nightmare on Elm Street series for pure imagination; both franchises have been consistently creative in regard for killing characters.
So there you have it, I hope this messy trip down memory lane has inspired you to dig through you movie collection.
