Growing Out (2009)
Review by Jeff Hudson

Directed by: Graham Ratliff

Starring:
Michael Hampton/Tom
Ryan Sterling/Archie
Devon Lott/Veronica
Chase Hemphill/Philip

Plot:
Having no luck with his music, Tom finds work as a caretaker for an old mansion. He cleans the house, and in doing so discovers something rather odd: a human hand growing out of the basement floor. Over time, the hand develops into an arm and eventually a head sprouts. The Growth aka Archie quickly became friends with Tom. Tom also finds himself involved romantically with his neighbor’s mysterious girlfriend, Veronica. Tom continues his secret relationship with Veronica despite the danger of getting caught. But he never suspects it will be Archie who gives him away or how violent the consequences can be.

Acting:
The acting in this film was pretty good Michael Hampton(Tom) did a real good job in his role he gave some real emotion that shined through very well, Devon Lott(Veronica) was real mysterious and had a unusual thing going for her, the rest of the cast was ok but the main character was Tom.

Gore:
I was a little let down here all we get is a fight scene and a use of a axe that was all off screen, so if your expecting any gore you should look elsewhere.

T & A:
Not a thing, it was bone dry.

Directing:
Graham did a nifty job making the feel of the film bizarre and had me wondering how this was going to turn out through the flick. There are also some real nice shots for a lower budget film.

Soundtrack:
We get a lot of acoustic songs that sounded good if you are into coffee shop type music.

Final thoughts:
Growing Out was a lot different than I thought it was going to be, judging by the cover art and plot of the movie I thought it would be more goofy and humorous, but in fact the humor is very very dark and I thought not funny at all, I would say it’s more of a depressing drama than anything else. With all of that being said from a horror standpoint I would say to pass this one up, I don’t think you will miss anything special here. I give it a 2/10.
