I had the pleasure of meeting and talking via Skype to the director Jared Cohn of this film from Asylum Pictures and I must give my apologies for not posting the review sooner. I wanted to pick his brain, before I revealed what I thought of his film. Did I like #Hold Your Breath? Yes, I did.
Group of friends out for a weekend of camping come upon a cemetery and one of the girls screams to hold their breath. Based on an urban legend, if you come upon a cemetery to hold your breath until you have passed it by or else the spirits of the dead can gain possession of your body. Did they all hold their breaths? NO!
The first person who became possessed is the stoner and his reaction to "No cell phones for the weekend" rule was taken to the extreme, when he pitched all their phones out of the glove compartment. A passing police officer got more than he bargained when punch into to work that day!
The spirit doesn't stay long in each individual and he hops around. Who is the spirit hopper? A convicted former preacher Van Hausen who went on a raping and murdering spree in the 1950’s and was sentenced to die by electrocution. The beginning of this film has some of the victims and their family gathered at a sanitarium to witness the good preacher’s final moments on this Earth. He flips out with his final words and the officers attending to the electrocution throw the switch without blindfolding the man and it was a gnarly mess. Van Hausen was foaming at the mouth and shake rattle and rolling in his seat, quite a shocker for the audience. Personally, I thought it was trifle funny. One of the witnesses was none other than Devanny Pinn of The Black Dahlia Haunting. Her character was the only one to survive her attack by Van Hausen and his handy-work left some major criss-cross scarring of her face.
So this Van Hausen is the spirit and he is up to his old tricks again when it comes to murder. The film had some pretty wicked kill scenes and one that will separate the victim from all the rest. Read between the line...sep-ar-ate, ha-ha. This is a fun horror film and I quite enjoyed viewing it. My favorite scene comes near the end when a battle between Van Hausen and a blast from his past have it out. Cool special effects!
I would recommend this film. For the gentleman who love the female form...this film won’t disappoint you. For those who are convinced that Asylum films cannot be well made...sorry to disappoint you...this one was good. Look for #HoldYourBreath and enjoy a little Spirit Hopping and I bet next time, you come upon a cemetery...you hold your breath until you pass it!
