Into the Woods
Review by David Rupp
This has to be, hands down, the surprise of the summer for us. We didn't exactly know what to expect but the film we viewed exceeded any notions we may have had. A tale told all too many times, kids, woods, killer, but this has a nice spin on it. A dejected husband ties up his ex-wife and torture-kills her in front of their 2 small children, cut to 15 years later and we have a rompin through the woods bout of mayhem and murder.
The acting in this feature is very natural and has a nice flow to it, only occasionaly does an actor/actress stumble on lines. I also have to give a nod to the use of practical effects over CG. They start off a little weak, like a cut throat is just a red smear, but pick up and take you to very uneasy places. For example a tree touniquet scene reminicent of Friday the 13th part V. The ending is just a touch transparent but anyone who watches a lot of horror films can usually guess the twist. Nice story and scripting make it entertaining though.
Camera work is nice, although the night shots went well, and were lit just so there were a few under-lit places. Sound was iffy in the beginning picking up more background noise than dialog but that also improves as the movie goes on. A nice original soundtrack kept things on balance and boasts all local music. Overall this is a well put together film with nice packaging, a slick menu and reccomend seeing it. I know I may just have to invite a bunch of people over with a case of beer and just launch this sucker. A big nod to cast and crew for a job well done.
