Maniac Nurses (1990)

Review by Adam C. Thomas

Directed By Léon Paul De Bruyn
Who doesn't love the idea of a sexy nurse? The idea of the pure white outfit, the huge, overflowing breasts, and the lacy stockings hanging on by a thread could turn any man on. At the same time, men love horror movies. Blood, gore, and aforementioned tig ol bitties make for an entertaining combination ninety nine percent of the time. Monsieur Bruyn got the idea that, "Hey why not mix two of the things men love the most, into one easy to enjoy flick?!" Oh, Monsieur, how very, very naive you were. None other than the world famous Troma picked this one up for release, and man, does it show. Now, don't get me wrong, I appreciate everything Lloyd Kaufman and the people at Troma have done for independent horror and sci-fi, but man, I just cannot enjoy any of their movies.
This movie was lacking in anything remotely resembling a movie, with the exception of a camera, actresses, and fake blod. The story was so thin, it could have been used as a bed sheet in a greasy interstate motel. The acting, well, let's just say it left quite a bit to be desired. This movie was basically mindless boobs, gore, and violence. I let the whole movie play through, catching enough to know that there was not a whole lot going on plot wise. I can find gore and naked people on the internet for free. If I want to watch a sexy horror movie, I want to watch a sexy horror movie, not some mindless mongoloid women dancing naked for ten minutes on a table.
Like I said, the effects were kind of lame, the story was vague and laughably minuscule, and the acting was paltry, at best. Like I said, I love Kaufman, and truly appreciate everything he has done for the indie film industry, which is a lot, but I have yet to find a Troma release that has held my attention for longer than about 30 minutes. Poultrygeist didn't do it, Maniac Nurses didn't do it, hell, I nearly fell asleep just watching the Nuke 'Em High trailer. The only one that has ever entertained me was Toxic Avenger, and that was only because it was such a huge cult hit.
I give this movie a 1/10.
