Mexican Director Gulliamo del Toro amazing and creative process has provided some very impressive monsters in films from Mimic to Blade II to the Hellboy films as well as the sublime Pan's Labyrinth, but how does he do it?
Del Toro said on the Leonard Lopate show, "I have a sort of a fetish for insects, clockwork, monsters, dark places, and unborn things.” and this is manifested through his concept designs. While working on a project del Toro will keep a visual diary filled with detailed notes and illustrations, from there he is able to do what he does best: create creatures.
Guillamo's mix of influences creates an evocative setting for the stories told, from the warm subterranean in Hellboy II to the dark and claustrophobic version in Mimic as well as the magical land of Pan's Labyrinth nestles against the backdrop of the Spanish civil war.
Whether it is depicting the concepts of other or expressing his own ideas, del Toro has built a rich frame work, with a directorial style that both pleases and overwhelms the eyes.
