Nightmare City (1980)

Review by Jeff Hudson

Directed by:Umberto Lenzi

Starring:
Hugo Stiglitz/Dean Miller
Laura Trotter/Anna Miller
Francisco Rabal/Major Holmes
Maria Omaggio/Sheila Holmes

Plot:
When an aircraft is forced to make an emergency landing near the site of a radioactive spill, the passengers are transformed into ultra violent, flesh-eating zombies who emerge from the hatch and set off on a feeding frenzy across the city. Can anyone stop the relentless rampage of the atomic undead?

Acting:
I felt the acting in this film was far, I wouldn’t say that the acting is what drives this movie but it works. Hugo Stiglitz(Dean Miller) was good in the lead role, he had some strong charisma and was good in the lead. The rest of cast doesn’t play much of a part but they all did a good job.

Gore:
Wow this is where the film shines, I don’t know if I have ever seen a body cont in a movie like this. We get tones of stuff including Stabbing, gunshots, slit throats, a axe to the head, blood drinking, a breast cut off, guys on fire, strangling, a spear gun to the stomach, eyes ripped out and explosions. Man this was jammed packed with good stuff.

T & A:
We get 2 pairs here, well one and a half cause one gets cut off.

Directing:
Umberto does a fine job with the setting of the film, I really liked the hospital scenes and all the gore effects where great. Also when this film was made it was new for zombies to run and use guns and weapons.

Soundtrack:
We get kind of a funky score during the few down times there are, but during the all the suspenseful scenes we get a in your face and intense score that is awesome.

Final thoughts:
Nightmare City was a huge surprise to me. It is a film I don’t ever here much about but feel it is one of the better foreign zombie films I have seen. We get a massive body count with brutal death scenes that even shocked me. The score is great and the acting was real good. The only thing I didn’t really care for was the ending, it’s a twist that I wont spoil but I thought this film didn’t need it. I would say this is a must see for all zombie movie fans. I give it a 8/10.
