Night Watch (2004)
Review by Bindi Lavelle

The first part of a epic Russian dark fantasy trilogy, Night Watch is enjoyable, but definably part of a larger story.

In modern day Moscow, there exists two super natural agencies which enforce the laws of an ancient agreement between good and evil; the night watch run by good super natural beings called others who watch over the actions of the dark others during the night, and the day watch made up of dark others who watch the good others during the day. These organizations go unnoticed by mortals of course.

The film follows, Anton, a member of the night watch, who through his earlier actions has become a part in a events that will shape the world of the others. The episodic structure of the film is all about creating a frame work for the climax of the trilogy, giving the viewer a sense of the impending.

The special effects are a pleasure; Computer generated imagery used for the maximum impact rather. Which bombards the mind with visually rich concepts, yet never overwhelming the viewer with effects for their own sake.

Again, Night Watch is a part of a trilogy so don't expect a hugely satisfying climax, however the this film sets the tone for what could be a massive conclusion. 7.5/10
