One Hell of a Love Story
Article by Bindi Lavelle
Jame O'Barr's The Crow is a t its core a simple yet elegant love story with some supernatural revenge thrown into the mix.
Basically, when a soul cannot rest because of the violent circumstances of their death, the crow can bring them back to set things right. the large black bird tends to favour couples, usually bring one back to avenge the other, but the many books and movies based on the comic look at other relationships.
It's easy to see how the crow has become as goth as Robert Smith, with the rich dark tone O'Barr sets with his art; death and romance are in equal measures the driving force of the story.
As mentioned earlier, the comic has spawned X movies, a TV show and a series of novels. The feature which easily allows for the expansion and variation of the world is tis premise; the crow has the ability to bring back anyone from the dead in order to right a wrong. But the crow and all of its spin offs focus on love rather than blood thirsty revenge.
While The Crow isn't a superhero from Hell as such, this comic does warrant mention for its portrayals of love, revenge and of course, death.
