Prince Of Darkness (1987)
Review by Jeff Hudson

Directed by: John Carpenter

Starring:
Jameson Parker/Brian
Lisa Blount/Catherine
Donald Pleasence/Father Loomis
Victor Wong/Prof. Birack

Plot:
A sinister secret has been kept in the basement of an abandoned Los Angeles church for many years. With the death of a priest belonging to a mysterious sect, another priest opens the door to the basement and discovers a vat containing a green liquid. The priest contacts a group of physics graduate students to investigate it. Unfortunately, they discover that the liquid contains the essence of Satan himself, and they also discover that he will release his father an all powerful Anti God! The liquid later comes to life itself, turning some of the students into zombies as the Devil comes forward to release his father. Will these students be able to stop him?

Acting:
The acting in this movie was real good, I would compare it a lot to Carpenter’s The Thing where the whole cast makes it really well done. Jameson Parker(Brian) is likeable and is a good lead character, Donald Pleasence(Father Loomis) is always great in anything he does, and we also get a cameo from Alice Cooper.

Gore:
We really don’t see a lot of gore at all but the way the death scenes were shot were great and almost more effective than seeing blood and guts, we get a guy impaled, stabbing, a piece of wood to the throat, stick to the eye, a cut off arm, and a cut off head.

T & A:
None of that schiza here folks.

Directing:
Carpenter does a awesome job making this a very eerie creepy flick, I thought the opening credits was really well done and sets a good example of what’s to come, and we also get some great shots, and camera work.

Soundtrack:
The score to this film was amazing, probably the best score I have head in any of Carpenter’s films, it’s very strong and hard hitting and gives a real feel to the movie, like it’s, it’s own character.

Final thoughts:
Prince Of Darkness is a unique well done movie that has a strong cast of characters, great story, and one badass score. If you are a fan of John’s other film you will not be let down by this movie at all. I would say this movie is worth buying, it’s just one of flicks you cant go wrong with. I give it a 9/10.
