Rampage (2009)

Review by Adam C. Thomas

Directed by Uwe Boll
Uwe Boll, if you have no idea who he is, is the director responsible for butchering quite a few video game-to-movie translations. He has been responsible for House Of The Dead, Postal, Alone In The Dark, and countless others. Every one of these movies was so terrible, it can't be imagined with a mortal mind. It also doesn't help that Boll is clown shit crazy. People who enjoy a good movie, such as myself, tend to avoid his movies, whatever the cost. So, when I saw this movie in my Netflix recommendations, I thought to myself, "Netflix, you silly program. I won't hold it against you, because after all, you're really just a bunch of ones and zeros. How could you know all of his movies are terrible?" Then I read the synopsis, and something strange happened. I was actually intrigued. Yes, the words Uwe Boll and interesting crossed my mind at the same time, and somewhere, an angle got their wings.
The movie starts off simple enough. A guy is living at home with his parents, just getting by. His parents decide that twenty three is far too old to be suckling the metaphorical teat, and politely ask him to find another place to stay, and/or a job. He hangs out with his buddy, who is a conspiracy theorist and anti-government advocate. He tries to convince Bill that the world is shit, and could use a reset. Of course Evan is all talk and no action, according to Bill. So, Bill, being a man of action, makes a plan.
Now, when most people plan an event based on politics, it usually involves some sort of rally, or a grass roots movement. Not Bill Williamson. His event is going to be the biggest and best politically charged killing spree ever! Oh wait, I forgot to mention that last part. You see, Bill creates a full body armor plated bullet proof suit, and then loads up on lightweight weaponry. He decided he's going to kill as many people as he can, to help the environment. Have you ever seen a car wreck and wanted to stop it, but were powerless? That's how this movie will make you feel. You know you're watching something terrible and chaotic, and everything inside you wants to step in put a stop to Bill's rampage, but you can't. All you can do is sit and watch this poor, unfortunate soul murder innocent people, in the name of global assistance.
I really approached this one with the utmost hesitance. I have so much disdain for Boll that I automatically discredit all of his movies. That usually only applied to his video game adaptations, so when I saw an original movie by him, not based on a video game, I couldn't help but wonder if it was worth my time. Needless to say, I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of this flick. Even if you're a hardcore Boll hater, such as myself, you should still check this one out. Gripping, tense, and violent, this movie will make you think. I give it an 8 out of 10.
