That Sara Kuhns has a great command of the English language is readily apparent from start to finish in this lengthy novel of 401 pages. And that should come as no surprise as the back cover reveals that she taught English in the Chicago and Phoenix areas. Added to that, her modern-world descriptions are unparalled by most, especially those centering around the bar crowd at Lolly’s. Lolly’s is a bar in the book where much of the action takes place. It’s the perfect setting to show the interactions between many intriguing characters like band members, Goths, artists, shapeshifters, etc. Sara Kuhns’s experience as a bartender probably greatly added to her being able to peg many bar activities and patrons. To say that she really nailed the bar scenes would be a significant understatement. Most of the main storyline centers around Lauren, the owner of Lolly’s, and her otherworldly passion for a vampire vigilante of sorts named Paul. The interactions between Paul’s extended family and her bar family greatly add to a feeling of warmth not often found in other novels of the same ilk. Furthermore, though Kuhns’s writing is clever and was able to both grip and impress me throughout, it’s of note that there’s no caustic wit included. The only thing I wasn’t too keen about is the font size; it’s too small for my liking. Other than that, no complaints. I greatly look forward to reading the second and third novels in this trilogy when they’re released. Needless to say, I highly recommend checking this book out. I give it a 9 out of 10.
