Super Sequels
Article by Bindi Lavelle

Sequels tend to get a bad rap, but is this really deserved? Admittedly there is a lot, LOT of formulaic sequels churned out, but there are also some true gems amongst the trash. Through hectic research I have compiled a five must see sequels, in no particular order:

A Nightmare on Elm Street Part 3
Nancy from the first Nightmare returns to teach kids in an asylum how to control their dreams and become dream warriors and battle Freddy as a team. This film also introduces Kristen, who features in the following 2 Nightmares.

Aliens
A terrifying follow up which easily stands on its own. This film expands on the Aliens mythos as well as developing the total badass persona of Ripley, who just seems to get tougher and tougher with each film in the franchise.

Army of Darkness
This is an obvious choice, Deadites, Evil Ash, Bruce Campbell's awesome performance as Ash; Army of Darkness is also the most quotable horror movie; hail to the king.

Friday the 13th part 2
This film introduces us to a lovable young chap by the name of Jason, a mama's boy who returns from the dead to extract revenge his mother's killers. The obvious way to do this is to run around a summer camp with a sack on his head.

Devils Rejects
After Rob Zombie got his psychedelic slasher urges out of his system, Zombie took a shift in the opposite direction and made a tight road movie which sees the lovable family of serial killers now the prey for a local cop on a revenge trip.

This five films show that horror sequels do have strength in their own right and are not always cut copies of the original, there are also many forgotten gems, but that is a story for another day.
