The Horde (2009)

Review by David Rupp

A group of cops seek to avenge the death of one of their own by paying a surprise visit to the drug dealers that murdered him. Little beknownst to everyone a mysterious circumstance causes the dead to rise and attack. Forced to team up to escape and survive, cops and criminals thinly veil their differences in this new world.

Starring: Claude Perron, Jean-Pierre Martins and Eriq Ebouaney

I thought this movie had some potential, maybe not so much in the rising dead aspect (they were fast and feral), but the situations that rose up around the survivors. All in all it was an entertaining film, being French the subtitles did occasionally disctract from the action inches above. The Horde was one of those stories where you can invest in the characters, sympathize, loathe, fear. Although my favorite scenes were involving Rene', an old soldier who still had some get up and go, not to mention some of the funniest dialogs.
The pacing and progression of story was well done and the strong acting did make this an enjoyable watch. Scenery and atmosphere is present and effective, but the one thing that let me down, yet added a touch of believability and real world tragedy is the entirely nihlistic ending. I say give this a whirl, it's streaming on Netflix as of this writing.
