The Man From Deep River (1972)

Review by Jeff Hudson

Directed by:Umberto Lenzi
Starring:
Ivan Rassimov/John
Me Me Lai/Maraya
Plot:
A photographer on assignment in the rain forest is ambushed and held slave by a primitive tribe, until the chief's daughter chooses him as her groom. After being initiated by various tortures, he becomes a part of the tribe and helps them against modern dangers and a cannibal tribe they're at war with.
Acting:
The acting was ok, the dubbing and sub titles were very bad so a lot of dialogue was missing. Ivan Rassimov(John) did a great job in the lead role, he was very believable and a easy person to get behind. Me Me Lai(Maraya) was just pretty much eye candy but hey there is nothing wrong with that.
Gore:
There is not a lot of gore but when we get it its used well. One thing I did not like was the killing of animals in the film, I know this comes with cannibal films but I felt it was used in this film more than some. We get some stabbing, tongues cut out, very little flesh eating and a throat slit.
T & A:
A lot of full nude jungle women. We also get a lot of man ass running around the jungle.
Directing:
Umberto did a great job with the location. One thing is that I felt he could added some more killing, for a cannibal film it was real slow and lacked the cannibal part.
Soundtrack:
The score was ok, typical of a lot of cannibal films out there.
Final thoughts:
The Man From Deep River was a lot different than I thought it was going to be. It was very slow paced and felt more like a drama than your run of the mill cannibal flick. I was not a fan at all of the animal violence but that part aside it was a very well made film. I would say any fan of the Italian cannibal genre should give this a watch. I give it a 5/10.
