The Mummy or Ramses the Damned
Review by Bindi Lavelle
Story by Anne Rice
Anne Rice is good with vampires, simple bloody sexy fun, she can even do witches, but what about Mummies? You, know, those stumbling zombie pharaohs in bandages.
Rice provides a plot clearly and intentionally inspired by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle; Set in the 1910s, in London, following Julie, the daughter of a recently deceased Egyptologist is captivated by her father's final find. Meanwhile though her family is greedily snatching the dead man's money. But between examining artifacts and the dashing Dr. Ramsey (who is actually Ramses the Damned) she doesn't really care.
The Mummy provides more of the same from Rice, however with none of the charm or characterization of the Vampire Chronicles. Despite a big build up as Dr. Ramsey/ Ramses the Damned begins to plot evil deed the tension remains mild.
The Mummy is worth while reading for fans of Anne Rice, it is however important to know that it isn't as good as her other work but it is interesting to see rice tackle an old favorite like the Mummy. 5/10
