Twilight Fall: A Novel of the Darkyn

Review by G.L. Giles
Author: Lynn Viehl

This is one of the best paranormal romance novels that I’ve read in some time. I believe this is in large part due to the fact that there aren’t too many sappy love scenes included. Rather, the “paranormal romance” scenes are somewhat sadomasochistic in parts. Perhaps I’m a bit jaded, but I found that refreshing. The lust-making scenes between Valentin Jaus and Liling Harper are of particular note. Valentin Jaus is an Immortal Darkyn Lord, which basically means he’s a vampire. However, it’s of note that he’s technically a vrykolakas. The vrykolakas were once human, but they now need blood to survive. Yet, they don’t have to kill humans to get the amount of blood they need. Valentin Jaus falls in love with a human by the name of Liling Harper, who just so happens to have supernatural powers, unbeknownst to Valentin at first. They are hunted down by the corrupt organization of priests known as the Brethren or the Light. Though the Brethren profess to have good intentions, their actions show how horrific they really are. The Brethren, or Les Freres de la Lumiere, are the sworn enemies of the Darkyn, or the vrykolakas. Even though the Darkyn are blood-suckers, they are actually the good guys. Well, at least comparatively. Definitely worth picking up a copy. I give it an 8 out of 10.
