Underrated...
Article by Bindi Lavelle
With the vast amount of hyped up flicks that really suck out there, I thought it was time to have a look at 5 lesser known but still great films:
Magic, directed by Richard Attenborough and written by mega screen writer, William Goldman sees Anthon Hopkins as a ventriloquist named Corky, who when not hanging out with his dummy is out killing folks. Nothing quite like an unhinged ventriloquist to creep you out.
For pure tension, there is Seconds. John Frankenheimer's lesser known follow up to the 1962 classic The Manchurian Candidate, Seconds has much of the same themes, however they are explored in a darker way; a banker, unhappy with his life comes in contact with a group known only as "The Company" which are able to give people a completelly new identity. So now as a new man Tony, he goes about his new life, however "The Company" is keeping very close tabs on him.
Another underrated flick is George A. Romero's zombie free Martin. The title character is a troubled youth who goes to live with an elderly relative in a small town in an attempt to stop his craving for blood. The best part of this film is that it is never explicitly said if Martin is a vampire or just a kid with issues.
Denzel Washinton has had a long and sucessful career, that is probably how Fallen has gotten lost amongst other films where he plays a cop. In Fallen, basically a seril killer who was locked up by Denzel's chararcter, and given the electric chair doesn't stay dead. The evil spirit is able to possess people and can move from body to body via touch.
And lastly, Wes Craven's New Nightmare gets a nod. This film is very post modern and beats the pants off Freddy's Dead. New Nightmare follows Wes and crew as the development of a new Freddy movie begins, but things quickly turn ugly as Freddy begins killing off the cast and crew.
Ok, so if you havn't seen these films, get to the video store now!
