Vampires - Part 2
Article by Bindi Lavelle
The interesting this about the vampire is the abundance of folktales featuring blood-suckers spanning so many different cultures. In contrast to last week’s feature on Europe, this week we are focusing on vampires from Africa.
In West Africa, looms the Sasabonsam, a creature that is said to live in trees, attacking with its iron teeth and hooks for feet.
Also in the West is the Adze. The Adze, has the form of a firefly but can transform into a human shape as well as possess people. The Adze also could walk through closed doors at night, making them quiet hard to protect against.
The Ramanga from Madagascar feeds not only by sucking blood but from nail clippings and spilled blood, but only that of nobility. Also referred to as a living vampire, the Ramanga is depicted as either an outlaw or a servant of the elders.
The vampire is a fantastic and frightening creature to look at in its variations and I will have more for you in the next year, until then, Happy Bloody Holidays.
