Vampires Part 3
Article by Bindi Lavelle
Welcome back blood-bathers, let's get stuck in the latest installment of the world vampires series. This week we will travel to Asia; a continent rich and diverse in its many customs and spiritual practices, which span a wide region, and of course there is plenty of room for vampires.
In Northern India, there is the Brahmarak Shasa, a creature with a crown made of intestines and a skull for drinking blood out of.
While in Japan, the home of some truly messed up horror flicks, there is the story of the Nukekubi. The Nukekubi has the appearance of a human but at night can detach its head in order to hunt prey.
You can rest assured, detachable vampires are also said to exist in the Philippines as well, in the form of Mandurrugo and the Manaangga. The Mandurrugo, takes the form of girl by day and at night grows wings and a hollow tongue at night, becoming something like a mozzie with a big human head. While the Manaangga has the appearance of a beautiful older woman, who at night severs its upper torso and flies to the homes of pregnant women to drink their blood with her pointy tongue. Similar stories of this nature are found in Malaysia and Bail.
The Jiang Shi, often referred to as a Chinese vampire, however is more of a ghoul: it is a reanimated corpse that kills the living to eat on their life essence and tend to be described as green or white.
The vampire is a truly intriguing creature in its many guises and so next week we will look at the Vampires of America.
