Vampires Part 5
Article by Bindi Lavelle
And now it is time for the fifth and final instalment of our vampire series, and this week we will be traveling down under to see vampires from Austraila. Like all cultures, Indiginous Australia is not without its share of monsters.
Some medicien-men are believed to be able to weaken a foe by pysicly draining thier blood, the method for doing this varies from area to area ranging from rituals of singing and dancing to pointing a bone at the intendied victim.
The Yara-ma-yha-who (yes *sigh* the one from the Scooby Doo movie), is a small red man known amongst some East Coast clans who has suckers on his hands and feet to suck blood from his victims. Once weakened, he could swallow you then spit you out, however you would now be small and red.
Other creatures in Aboriginal mythology fit the modern discription of a psychic vampire, creatures able to take an manipulate another's energy.
The idea of the Vampire we see in pop-culture is far more limited than the blood sucker tales found in folktales and mythology. However, it is the adapitiblity of the concept which makes it univerisal and horrorfying.
