Yes Remakes Suck
Article by Bindi Lavelle
The constant remakes being spat out by the Hollywood machine drive me crazy, and I don't mean in the fun set your cousin's care bears on fire way more the “I'm mad as hell and I'm not going to take it anymore” way.
And can you really blame me? Horror films have suffered in recent years due to a lack of originality, the growth of the genre was stunted by second rate remakes, possessing the artistic integrity and quality of the cover band at your local pub.
However that's not to say all remakes are bad, while yes, of course the vast majority suck, there are some gems hidden amongst the rubble:
Omega Man, 1971's take on the popular Richard Matheson novel, I am Legend. Originally filmed as The Last Man On Earth in 1964 with Vincent Price. I am Legend was of course later re-imaged (shudder)with Will Smith as lead, best portrayed my Charlton Heston in the 70s version.
There is also the classic John Carpenter film, The Thing (1981) based the Macarthy era The Thing From Another Planet. A purely amazing triumph in film-making.
Another 50s science fiction film remade with a dark twist was The Fly; morphed by the mind of David Cronenberg.
Francis Ford Copala crafted a stunning version of Dracula, heavy on atmosphere instead of cheese and cheap thrills like so many previously released versions.
It is incredibly easy to spot flaws in remakes, so over the coming weeks we will take a closer look at these examples, to see how and why they succeeded where so many failed.
